Tesco fined for fire safety breaches

Tesco has been fined £95,000 and ordered to pay £24,321 in costs after pleading guilty to serious breaches of the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005.

London fire brigade were called to a fire at the Tesco supermarket at Colney Hatch in Barnet.  When they arrived they found that the store was locked but managed to attract the attention of a shop floor worker who was restocking shelves.

The firefighters discovered that there had been a fire in the staff kitchen but it had been put out by staff using a fire extinguisher and fire blanket.  There was still a significant amount of smoke in the kitchen and the fire crews had to ask staff several times to evacuate the premises.

The incident led to concerns about fire safety within the store and a subsequent inspection found a number of breaches of the fire regulations.

Failure to comply with the law as in this case, can result in a prosecution.
