The Carbon Reductions Commitment (CRC) Energy Efficient Scheme which comes into force this year will require businesses to record energy use and from 2011, pay by the tonne for the carbon that they emit.
This will apply to all businesses that use more than 6000MWh electricity each year. Currently that is equivalent to an annual bill of M£1/2. Businesses which fall into this category must register for the CRC Energy Efficiency Scheme between April and September 2010.
Household names will be amongst the companies affected and the Environment Agency predicts that the days of leaving doors open and leaving the lights on 24 hrs a day will be a thing of tha past as they look for the quick wins to reduce carbon emissions.
