Employment Legislation Changes, are you aware?

The changes are:

Minimum wage

As of today, the National Minimum Wage (NMW) rate will increase to:

  • £5.80 for workers aged 22 or above
  • £4.83 for workers aged between 18 and 21
  • £3.57 for workers aged between 16 and 17

Tips and gratuities

Employers will no longer be able to include tips to make up the balance of the minimum wage.

Previously, employers could use service charges and gratuities processed through the payroll as part of staff wages.

Weekly pay limit

The limit on a week’s pay – used to calculate statutory redundancy payments – will rise from £350 to £380 where the event giving rise to compensation or payment occurs on or after 1st October 2009.

This increase will also affect other statutory compensation payments including the basic and additional awards for unfair dismissal and compensation for non-compliance with flexible working procedures, amongst others.
