Moves are underway to accredit the health and safety profession, and although this should be welcomed by every safety professional, it is likely to be a good while before it comes to fruition.
In the meantime, if you need to employ the services of a safety consultant, at the very least check they are members of IOSH or IIRSM. Also ask them to demonstrate their experience carrying out work similar to what you want and ask them for references so you can follow them up.
Remember, safety professionals should be providing you with competent and sensible advice, not giving you dubious decisons which could result in prosecution, fines or imprisonment and more importantly, serious injury to your employees.
A few simple checks can prevent you using someone who is not competent to advise you.
